Building a Better Digital Community: Accessibility, Accountability, and the Power of Connection

Blog Customization and Accessibility

My media literacy blog is a space where I want to reflects my interest in journalism, culture, creativity, and thoughtful digital engagement. I would use a clean, editorial-inspired design with a neutral color palette, readable typography, and intentional imagery so the content remains the primary focus.

Accessibility would be a priority in my design choices. I would use high-contrast text and backgrounds, descriptive headings, and a clear navigation structure to make the site easier to read and navigate. I would also include alternative text for meaningful images, captions or transcripts for multimedia content, and descriptive link text so visitors using assistive technology can understand the content. I would avoid relying on color alone to communicate information and ensure the site is usable on mobile devices and with a keyboard.

These choices reflect my belief that digital spaces should be designed with their audiences in mind. An accessible blog allows more people to participate in conversations about media, culture, and society.

Community Guidelines

Creating Space for Thoughtful Conversation

This blog is a space to explore media, culture, journalism, and the ways digital spaces shape our experiences. I believe online communities can encourage meaningful connections, expose people to new perspectives, and create opportunities for learning. As Howard Rheingold discusses in The Virtual Community, digital spaces have the potential to bring people together around shared interests. I want this community to reflect that potential through respectful, thoughtful engagement.

What I expect from commenters:

  • Be respectful, even when you disagree. Critique ideas, not people.

  • Contribute thoughtfully and support factual claims with credible sources when possible.

  • Avoid harassment, hate speech, personal attacks, spam, and the sharing of private information without consent.

  • Stay open to perspectives and experiences different from your own.

Reporting inappropriate comments: If you encounter a comment that violates these guidelines, please flag it through the site's designated reporting method or contact the site administrator.

Comment moderation: I reserve the right to remove comments that contain harassment, discrimination, misinformation presented deceptively, spam, or other harmful content. Disagreement and constructive criticism are welcome; harmful behavior is not.

Banning policy: Repeated or serious violations may result in a permanent ban from commenting.

As Columbia Journalism Review and New York Magazine explore in their discussions of the public interest and online communities, digital spaces are shaped by the systems and choices behind them. My goal is to foster a space where conversation serves the community, not conflict or engagement for its own sake.
